Why The EU Wants More Water Freight |

To some, it seemed a strangely restricted agenda for the Belgian Presidency’s sole informal transport council: the ministers meeting in Antwerp on September 16 were to limit their discussions to the issue of water-borne freight. But that was precisely the point. While they could have delved into road congestion, pollution, airline safety, rail networks, or any other transport issue, they instead devoted their entire meeting to what EU Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas called the “vastly underused potential” of Europe's rivers, canals and seas for freight transport. He said coastal shipping and inland water transport have not been able to realise their full potential of growth though they are more energy efficient, environmentally cleaner and economical.
